The Stool Won’t Fall Over This Fall
In a meeting with a bunch of the LGM staff at LifeChurch.tv yesterday we talked about our group ministry being like a three legged stool. In order for it to stand, all three legs have to be of equal length and strength.
Identifying the first leg was simple: without groups there’s no group ministry so “Starting” LifeGroup is leg one. The next two legs address the fact that groups tend to die for two reasons: not enough people and/or not enough training. So the second leg is “Filling” groups and the third is “Keeping” groups.
The idea is this: Every campus LifeGroup/Missions pastor must own the fact that the stool will stand only if the campus is effectively building each leg consistently.
What are your ideas about Starting, Filling, and Keeping? In which of these areas have we been successful? In which one’s have we failed? How can you successfully build these legs on your campus?
Now’s your time to give input. Your ideas will shape our ongoing strategy!

I personaly believe I have failed at all 3. Filling and keeping have been my hardest to achieve. Groups get started then no one comes then they say heck with it. We have to give groups the tool to fill then train the leaders and the coaches to help them keep. LifeGroups are the heartbeat of LifeChurch.TV. Thank you so much for getting this conversation going to create healthy groups.

I’d say we’re in the same place as Rodney right now - I have a list of people who have said in the past 4 months, “I’m willing to lead a LifeGroup,” but I don’t have a line of people wanting to become involved (waiting to FILL the groups).
The KEEPING leg in Stillwater is probably also too short. I can do a better job of training and passing vision along to the leaders so they’re equipped and have a vision for LGs in general and their group specifically. Looking forward to some roundtable events in July and beginning a leader blog to help facilitate this!

Thanks for the comments guys. What are some things you have done (or would like to do) to compensate for the Filling and Keeping shortcomings on your campus?

I truely believe we are entering into a new season of explosive growth for the LifeGroups ministry at LifeChurch.tv.
As we take the best ideas from those on the front lines and implement them across all of our campuses we’ll begin to see a momentum grow, taking us forward into this new season for LifeGroups.
Thank you all for sharing your great ideas and your commitment to “Everyone in a LifeGroup…every LifeGroup living a lifestyle of Missions.”

I think 2 key factors in “keeping” are… 1-groups engaged in mission and 2-equipping leaders.
I can use some input this week on equipping leaders. Last week we partnered with The Bridge Ministry and Oasis Church to feed, clothe and love about 200 homeless that live on the river banks around the Jefferson Street bridge in Nashville. We had 10 LifeGroups there to serve. They all walked away with a great experience.
What I want to see now is for them not to wait for another “event”, but that they will take the initiative to plan projects like this as a group.
What are some ideas for getting leaders more involved this way? And what are some pitfalls to avoid?

Tony: Sounds like a great LifeGroup project! Some thoughts on getting groups to take the extra step of serving on their own…set the expectation for group leaders that a LifeGroup is about serving. This is a constant, persistent process that involves shaping values and expectations. Also, only do a MicroMission (like your event) in partnership with an existing agency that also offers opportunities for individual groups to come back on their own and serve with the same group, and have people from the agency take front and center during the event so groups develop a personal relationship with the people at the agency.
Alan: We’re lagging in FTW on getting people into groups. We talked for an hour+ this morning in our team meeting about this very thing, discussing why it’s so hard to get people interested. No easy answers, but one consensus was that we tend to emphasize the act of joining a group rather than fostering the values/purpose of LifeGroups. The thinking was that if we can really portray the value of groups people will naturally want to get involved.

Thanks Jeff!
I believe I’ve heard you mention “Missions Catalyst” before. How does this work in getting leaders to plan Micro Mission and LifeReach projects?

Tony, I’ve been working with Danny and Amanda to put together a way to lay out for anyone who is interested the details on how to do the whole MicroMissions/LifeReach thing and make it driven by volunteer leadership, so that will be coming soon.
